On the pro side large well lit screen that can be seen even in bright sun light, even very bright when set on the lowest setting on night screen, auto or manual settings. The lane assist feature works well. The unit acquires satellites very quickly even at first start up, 20 seconds. At posted speeds the voice feature will notify of the next turn in time but the display lags. Watching the display alone and you will be 100 feet past you turn! The 1700 is very chatty and I find myself telling it to “shut up you moron”. I’ve used it now for more than 5000 miles and once the unit has decided on it’s initial routing it doesn’t like to change it’s mind, sometimes trying to send you thru endless u-turns till it gets it’s way, even though it’s very clear that the route you are on from experience is clearly the most direct, also insisting to take you sometimes 200 mile out of your way!!! I’ve used many gps units and thought the tomtom was dumb but it beats this. By far the best gps still is the iway 500c (no longer made by Lowrance). If you want a gps that is on the same level as the 1700 I recommend getting a shoe box take a blue marker and make a dot in the upper left hand corner, then take a red marker make a dot in the lower right corner, now draw a line to both dots. Now it’s a heads up competition!!!! SAVE YOUR MONEY AND AVOID THIS ONE

NICE big screen; $ 100 less than Garmin 7in unit for which I probably have the maps for. Reminds me of the handheld units from Magellan I had before; a pain to set up and learn; but adqequate once you learn it.

Lack of A/C adapter is unbelievable; how do you learn the unit; sit in you car every time your want to try something new; or figure how memory cards work? Again; could have bought AC adapter with unit if it was more clear that none was provided. What voltage +/- is required? can one make / use other battery source for out of car use? Mount issue was most confusing; I kept getting bounced from Amazon page to page; but what the hell is a friction mount. I would like a remove antennae connection to get it out of line of sight across dashboard. I still need a better mount(CA is not legal to mount on front glass, and no antennae to have on rear windows.
