JBL On Stage 200ID High-Performance Speaker Dock for iPhone 1G and iPod

I was given the JBL On Stage 200iD as a Christmas gift. I was very dissapointed to discover within the first five minutes of having it on that it randomly turns the volume up full blast. Since I got it to listen to quiet music in my office, it’s clearly unacceptable. I stuck with it a while longer, hoping it was a glitch, but it would only work for an hour or so before the volume would go up again. Apparently this is a problem (along with volume turning down) that JBL has had with the entire On Stage series for years (according to some complaints I found on the internet). The sound is great and I would love it otherwise, but I think that the entire line is to be avoided because of this glitch.

Sound quality is really important to me, so I spent time in Best Buy before buying this item, testing each brand for quality. JBL came out on top by a long shot, thus I went to Amazon and bought this unit. This is the small unit, and the dynamic range sounds great. I bet the larger version sounds really good. The only thing this unit doesn’t have is an FM tuner.

We had an older JBL player for our iPod and it was decent but this new unit for the iPhone is miles ahead in sound and simplicity. I bought it as a Xmas gift for my wife to use in her art studio and she loves it. It also has decent bass response for having such a small speaker. JBL got it right on this one.

Sound quality is better than the Bose in a side-by-side comparison (to my ears). Amazing volume capability, amazing bass, crystal clear sound.

I got this product after discovering the Bose portable iPod dock I had bought wouldn’t work with my Nano 4G. Because I couldn’t get any sound at all from my iPod through the Bose, I can’t really say how the audio on these two products compare, but I’m very pleased with the JBL unit. I’m not an audiophile, but I didn’t see that much difference between the quality from the Bose display unit (which does not allow you to play your iPod) and the JBL unit (which does). The remote has all the buttons to navigate through the iPod – a real plus, since the Bose didn’t. And of course, the price was right. I bought a DC adapter so I could use this dock for long road trips, and it works fine there as well as in the apartment. I would have liked some sort of traveling case, which I would have been willing to buy separately.
