I bought this as a gift, and was disappointed that it would not autofocus with the D40 (and a few other ‘entry level’ digital SLRs). Otherwise it worked well.

I picked this lens because I wanted a “general/all-around” lens. It does have some slight limitations when zoomed all the way in and using auto focus. But for the price payed and the ease of not having to lug around a bag full of lenses to do what this does, I am very pleased.

This is really a very good lens. And since it has a focusing motor built in it works fine with the D40. I also have a D300 and naturally it works great on it.
No VR, but it is much cheaper than a Nikon. It is a great “walk around” lens that I normally keep on the D40.
By the way: I got mine at Best Buy. I paid almost $100- more than if I had bought it from Amazon, and I also had to pay sales tax!
