Afterglow AP.1 Controller for PS3 – Blue “New for 2010″

The controller lights up, but the buttons are opaque. So, any perceived benefit by the light (for playing in the dark), is lost.
If you are looking for an inexpensive (wired) controller, that is lit like some PC case mods, then this controller is probably for you.
If you want to be able to use this controller in the dark and don’t have the symbol position memorized, or need to double-check from time to time, you should probably look elsewhere. The glow from the controller in your hands also takes away from the immersive experience you would otherwise have when playing in a pitch-black room, with nothing but the glow of the TV staring in your face.

I bought this controller expecting to return for not being very good, but I have to say it is actually pretty good! The lights are great, and even better that you can set them to be on or off or turn on only when the controller rumbles. I didn’t have any problems with the response on this controller, i played street fighter with it right off the bat and didn’t find much difficulty and the controller felt good in the hands. My favorite part about this controller is the completely different layout of control stick and d-pad. The d-pad on this is way better than any actually ps3 controller, the control sticks are also from the xbox controllers, and in my opinion, thats a good thing. Another thing to think about if you haven’t noticed yet, the analog stick and the d-pad switched places from the traditional ps3 controller, much better ergonomically for first person shooters. It also works fine with PC games, however I could not get it to work with my xbox.

The Afterglow AP.1 “New for 2010″ controller is a good controller if you consider the price comparison to a PS3 Sixaxis controller. The lights are cool and it is responsive but not nearly as responsive as the $44.99 PS3 controllers are. Considering I paid $24.99 for it, I can’t complain. I used this controller to play MLB10 The Show and I was able to play the game very easily with this controller. Again, the Sixaxis controller is far more responsive. If you want another controller to actually play competitively with, stick with what works. If you want a cool looking, fun to play with in the dark controller which you’ll use just to have a little fun without needing it to be completely responsive, the Afterglow controller should be fine.
